Canada Post service resumes on Tuesday, December 17th

December 16th, 2024, 12:00 PM CST

Postal operations to resume on Tuesday, December 17 following CIRB ruling.

On December 13, the Minister of Labour established a process with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to assess the likelihood of Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) reaching agreements by the end of 2024.

Employees to return to work on December 17 and the resumption of service to begin

After 2 days of hearings, the CIRB has issued its ruling confirming the parties are at an impasse. As a result, the CIRB has ordered employees to return to work and postal operations to begin to resume at 8 am local time on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. We will share further details shortly but want to remind customers and employees that our operations will remain closed on Monday, December 16.

Canada Post will continue to operate, but customers should anticipate delays in the event of strike activity

As you know, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) will be in a legal position to begin strike activity on November 15 at 12:01 am ET, unless the parties reach agreements before then.

In the event of rotating strikes by CUPW, we will continue delivering and make every effort to minimize service disruptions. However, your business should be prepared for possible delays in the processing and delivery of mail and parcels.

We want you to be aware of what strike activity will mean for our operations and your business.

What you should expect during a rotating strike

Our operations will continue should rotating strikes occur.

Rotating strike activity may be isolated to specific locations, affecting those areas for a specified period of time.

During a rotating strike, Canada Post will continue to accept, process and deliver mail and parcels in unaffected areas. However, shutting down facilities or regions with rotating strikes can cause immediate ripple effects throughout the network.

Once an item is inducted in our network, it will be secure but cannot be retrieved. Items will be delivered as quickly as possible after a disruption is over and operations resume.

What you should expect during a national labour disruption

In the event of a national labour disruption, mail and parcels will not be delivered and no new items will be accepted until the disruption is over. All mail and parcels in our network will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible on a first-in, first-out basis once operations resume.

Processing and delivery may take some time to fully return to normal following either a rotating strike or a national labour disruption.

Service guarantees

On-time delivery guarantees for parcel services remain in effect. However, they may be temporarily suspended for items that are processed or delivered in areas affected by a labour disruption. We will notify you if on-time delivery guarantees are suspended more broadly.

Due to the uncertainty caused by possible strike activity, we will be suspending date-specific delivery for Neighbourhood Mail™ mailings. We will notify you when date-specific delivery is reinstated.

Stay up to date

We value the trust you place in us to deliver for your business, and we are committed to providing you with timely updates and the details you need to make informed decisions.

We will notify you if there is a labour disruption of any kind, and keep you updated as the situation develops. You can also continue to visit canadapost.ca/negotiations for regular updates on negotiations and a list of locations affected by strike activity.

Canada Post intends to continue operating as strike notices received from CUPW

Also important to note that even though CUPW has called the 72 hour notice, they still have not decided if they will strike or cause a disruption at that exact time. It just means they will be legally allowed to as of 12:01 am Friday Nov 15. It is also at that time they would announce what type of disruption they are choosing, either rotational or full on stoppage.

Canada Post Corporation will work to minimize service disruptions. A labour disruption would affect the millions of Canadians and businesses who rely on the postal service. It is critical that both parties focus their energies on resolving issues to reach negotiated agreements.

In the event CUPW initiates rotating strike activity, Canada Post intends to continue delivering for Canadians and Canadian businesses while working to reach agreements. The Corporation will work to minimize service disruptions, but customers may experience delays.

Mail and parcels flow through Canada Post’s highly integrated national network each day to get from sender to receiver. Shutting down facilities or regions with rotating strikes can cause immediate and prolonged ripple effects throughout the network.

As of right now it is business as usual this week until we hear further info.

If you select a Canada Post shipping option at checkout, this may or may not affect delivery of your orders this and next week. If timeliness of your order is critical, we would recommend selecting another shipping carrier in the short term.

  • For Canadian customers, we recommend shipping via FedEx or ICS Courier.
  • For US customers, we recommend shipping via FedEx.
